The Light

August 1, 2006

The conference today was quite boring. Entitled “Borneo in the New Century”, it was certainly an eye-opener on certain issues that I, as someone who lives in Borneo, did not know. *blush*

Four simultaneous sessions were held in different halls. I attended the one on “Ritual, Cosmology and the Supernatural” because the rest just seemed to dull for me. I needed something more exciting to keep me awake for hours. For me to go into details of the conference would be a drag down for this blog as it has been quite dull lately, hasn’t it?

Anyhow, one of the presenters in the session I attended looked like he was a teenager. I swear, he could be in jeans and a shirt; I see him on the street and would think he was a 17/18 year old!!! I looked at the list of participant names…and he is a PHD holder!!!!! Dr. Christian Oesterheld from the University of Hamburg. OMG!

At that split second I felt like a total idiot. Here I am, a 23 year old, going to be 24, STRUGGLING to get a Masters Degree. *sigh* I feel like such a total loser. I mean I have no proof he is less than 20 years old but he looked it! Yes, don’t judge a book by its cover…but STILL!!! It was a HUGE eye-opener for me. Ironic huh? I attended the conference to learn something about BORNEO research and I come back with learning something totally different.

I had a glimpse of the light. I sit here, daily struggling to get things done with my thesis and someone who looks SO MUCH younger than me has a PHD. I must try harder and stop complaining on how tough it is. I must take it like a man, wait I mean WOMAN!

I should channel all my energy to focusing on school and not worry so much on things I can’t control. I have wasted so many days worrying about things I can’t control the past few weeks. I better stop it immediately if I want a Masters Degree in two years.

It’s so sad that I’ve only realized this now huh? How pathetic.

I suppose the only way to focus and get things done is make a daily TO-DO list everynight before going to bed.

Okay, my to-do list for tomorrow:

  1. Laundry – got WAY too many unwashed clothes (yes that includes underwear, luckily I have lots of supplies)
  2. Organize my desk – WAY too messy with clips and papers and post-it notes all over.
  3. Organize my books – preferbly in alphabetical order
  4. Print articles – I have so many files saved in My Documents that need to be printed.
  5. Make LOTS of coffee – my late nights pondering has taken a toll on my sleeping habits.
  6. Eat fruits – believe it or not I keep forgetting to eat my apples and oranges.
  7. Visit the grandma – STILL unconscious, still not much change in her condition. *sigh*

I hope the light stays there…

  2. Hello,
Christian will turn 28 this year so that means when you attended his session he was 25 y/o more or less. He’s my friend and yes, he’s highly intellectual and a fantastic pianist. I’m so proud to have known him as well :)
